4. Calendar Synchronicity & Symmetry

theAbysmal Calendar’s Solar and 13~XX components interact in such a manner to create a symmetrical structure of our measure of time. The numerology inherent in the Calendar repeats itself, making the scheduling of future events simpler, eliminating the need to constantly refer to a paper/digital Calendar or Almanac.

I~XX and the Year

The XX glyphs have five distinct subgroupings according to Table 4.1 below.

The Days of the Year have 2 progressions according to the 13~XX Calendar: they progress from Day~to~Day chronologically, and they progress from Year~to~Year according to the group to which they belong.  From Day~to~Day, the numbers progress from 1 to 13, and the glyphs from I to XX, as the columns in Table 4.2 illustrate. From Year~to~Year, any given Day’s number progresses from 1 to 13, however, its glyph progresses according to its group:

V to X to XV to XX

Table 4.2 below illustrates the patterns formed by the interaction of the 365 Days of the Year with the 13~XX Calendar. Each column represents the weekdays of any given year, beginning with Year 0.  Each row represents any given weekday from Year~to~Year.

This pattern allows us to think progressively beyond our simple Day~to~Day concerns, and introduces a longer view of time into our regular routine.

The Year also bears a number~glyph combination, which cycles through the group IV, IX, XIV, and XIX. The last Weekday of any given Year, always a Friday, bears the number~glyph for the upcoming Year. This instills the notion that the present and future have their roots in the past.

Year 0 (Dec 21st 2012 to Dec 20th 2013) bears the number~glyph 13-XIX.

the Quarters and 13~XX

the first and last Day of each Quarter fall in a progressive week in the month in which it occurs:

  • Quarter 0 begins the first Week of Month 0, and ends the first Week of Month 3
  • Quarter 1 begins and ends the second Weeks of Months 3 and 6 respectively
  • Quarter 2 begins and ends the third Weeks of Months 6 and 9 respectively
  • Quarter 3 begins and ends the last Weeks of Months 9 and 12 respectively

the first and last Day of each Quarter bears the glyphs from each of the progressive groups as follows:

  • Quarter 0 begins and ends on I, VI, XI, XVI
  • Quarter 1 begins and ends on II, VII, XII, XVII
  • Quarter 2 begins and ends on III, VIII, XIII, XVIII
  • Quarter 3 begins and ends on IV, IX, XIV, XIX
  • New Year’s Day bears V, X, XV, XX

Midway Days Synchronicities

the 4 Midway Days of each Quarter create a number of symmetries within the Calendar, and as such, form a fundamental structural component.

the 4 Midway Days:

each bear the same number (1~13) as one another during any given Year and bear a glyph from each successive group.

  • Quarter 0’s Midway Day cycles through I, VI, XI, XVI
  • Quarter 1’s through II, VII, XII, XVII
  • Quarter 2’s through III, VIII, XIII, XVIII
  • Quarter 3’s through IV, IX, XIV, XIX
  • New Year’s Day through V, X, XV, XX

each fall on progressive Weeks of the Month in which they occur:

  • Quarter 2’s Midway falls on the first Week of Month 8
  • Quarter 3’s on the second Week of Month 11
  • Quarter 0’s on the third Week of Month 1
  • Quarter 1’s on the fourth Week of Month 4

The Zodiac

The Testaments

From the Old & New Testaments of the Bible, there are descriptions of beings (cherubim) that hold a wheel in the sky, and bear the faces of an ox, a lion, an eagle and a man. These correspond to the symbols for Taurus, Leo, Ophiuchus and Aquarius. (although we consider the serpent healer the symbol for Ophiuchus, the calendar becomes increasingly symmetrical with the Eagle symbol applied in its stead. read on).

Ezekiel Chapter 1

“4 I looked, and I saw a windstorm coming out of the north—an immense cloud with flashing lightning and surrounded by brilliant light. The center of the fire looked like glowing metal,
“5 and in the fire was what looked like four living creatures. In appearance their form was that of a man,
“6 but each of them had four faces and four wings.
“10 Their faces looked like this: Each of the four had the face of a man, and on the right side each had the face of a lion, and on the left the face of an ox; each also had the face of an eagle.
“19 When the living creatures moved, the wheels beside them moved; and when the living creatures rose from the ground, the wheels also rose.
“20 Wherever the spirit would go, they would go, and the wheels would rise along with them, because the spirit of the living creatures was in the wheels.
“21 When the creatures moved, they also moved; when the creatures stood still, they also stood still; and when the creatures rose from the ground, the wheels rose along with them, because the spirit of the living creatures was in the wheels.”

Revelation Chapter 4

“6 In the center, around the throne, were four living creatures, and they were covered with eyes, in front and in back.
“7 The first living creature was like a lion, the second was like an ox, the third had a face like a man, the fourth was like a flying eagle.”

Considering the origins of the word Zodiac – the wheel of animals/living things – Libra stands out as the only inanimate symbol of the 13 signs. This gives it particular importance.

So, if we circle the 5 months that bear the constellations Taurus, Leo, Libra, Ophiuchus and Aquarius, our calendar looks like this (at least it does for the Northern Hemisphere)


The Months bearing Taurus, Leo, Ophiuchus and Aquarius each contain one of the 4 Midway Days of the Quarter, and Libra contains the Solstice opposite the New Year, with 6 Months on either side, which places it in the role of fulcrum, and as such, we see a true balance.

the Calendar, Zodiac and Elemental Symbolism

Ancient astronomers and astrologers used a system of five elements in their symbol systems: air, water, earth, fire and aether. Each element had developed a number of associations, however, for our purposes, the directions and their masculine/feminine attributes suffice to avoid unnecessary distraction.

If we further apply the traditional elemental symbolism (fire, earth, air, water) attributed to the Zodiac, with two adjustments, then it becomes a multiply symmetrical system. Currently, we attribute air to Libra and water to Scorpio. If we attribute aether to Libra (the fifth element), air to Scorpio and water to Ophiuchus, then we see both linear and radial symmetry in the calendar as illustrated below.

Symmetries (excluding Libra) include

  • Each circled month bears one of the five elements
  • from Aries and running clockwise, the elements alternate between Masculine and Feminine
  • from Aries, the elements alternate through the four elements 3 times
  • the elements laterally across from each other are paired masculine (air-fire) and feminine (water-earth)
  • Opposite sides of the circle have opposing elements (fire-water and earth-air)

Calendar Numerology
theAbysmal Calendar’s numerical structure creates symmetry across measures of time, which give it a self-similar function. Note that these correlations represent exact periods of time, not approximations.
